'Don't forget your old bag' comes to Dawlish
A campaign to help reduce carrier bag usage in Teignbridge is mounting as the winners of the competition to design the Dawlish reusable bag are announced
Teignbridge Council has teamed up with the the local community group, Dawlish Transition Ambition as well as the Dawlish Business Environmental Network, Dawlish Fairtrade, Community Open DAW, Dawlish Chamber of Commerce and Dawlish Warren Traders Group to bring the reusable bags to the town.
Many shops across Dawlish have already pledged support for the campaign, and in coming weeks and months will help by displaying promotional material and asking customers before automatically giving out carrier bags.
We are proud to announce that the winners of the competition to design a reusable bag for Dawlish are:
Ebby Walsh, aged 8 from Cockwood Primary School (joint first with);
Shannon Melmoth, aged 14 from Dawlish Community College
Chloe Wainwright aged 14 from Dawlish Community College was the runner up.
The two winning designs will be printed on either side of the Dawlish Reusable Bag, which will be printed this summer (funding permitting).
The Problem with plastic bags
· Each year an estimated 500 billion to 1 trillion plastic bags are consumed worldwide. That equates to over one million per minute. Billions end up as litter each year
· Animals get trapped in them and die
· Reports estimate that plastic bags can take up to 1000 years to degrade
· Plastic bags don't biodegrade, they photo degrade under sunlight, breaking down into ever smaller toxic pieces, contaminating soil and waterways and entering the food web leading to accidental ingestion by animals
· Hundreds of thousands of sea turtles, whales and other marine mammals die every year from eating discarded plastic bags mistaken for food
· They clog our waterways and end up as very unsightly litter
