Listed Buildings
Information on the 2,200 buildings that are afforded special protection due to their historic or architectural interest.
Historic buildings and structures that are deemed to be of national importance by virtue of their architectural and/or historic interest, close historical association with nationally important people or events, or group value - where buildings comprise an important architectural or historic unity, such as a square or terrace - may be included on the statutory list of buildings of architectural and historic buildings.
The Plan area has approximately 1,800 list entries relating to around 2,200 individual buildings and structures. The listings range from historic mansions to milestones.
Listed buildings are graded according to their importance to the nation's built heritage. Those of outstanding national architectural or historic interest are identified as Grade 1 and 11*. Those of national importance are listed as Grade 11. Of the Plan area's stock of listed buildings 8% - above the national average - attain Grade 1 and 11* status, the remaining 92% are Grade 11.
Additional planning powers exist for listed buildings covering a range of building operations in order to ensure that their special interest is safeguarded.
