Cycling & Walking Festival - Sunday 5th May 2013

A Sunday of cycling and walking activities to celebrate the long awaited opening of the Town Quay Bridge across the River Teign will take place from the grounds of Old Forde House in Newton Abbot.

The spectacular new bridge from the Town Quay and the connecting path to Kingsteignton are the first phase of a trail to be built along the Teign Estuary to the coast, part of the National Cycle Network. The bridge has been constructed by Devon County Council with a contribution of £500,000 of Big Lottery funding from Sustrans, the sustainable transport charity. It is already proving a big hit with cyclists and walkers.

Community Event - 5th May

The event will be hosted at Forde House by Teignbridge District Council and will run from 11 am to 4 pm. The day will feature thrilling demonstrations of professional trials bike riding, cyclo-cross racing for under-12s and under-16s, free bike hire, Dr Bike checks, refreshments and many stalls by cycling and walking clubs and other charities.

From Old Forde House there will be a series of cycle rides and walks with leaders, some rides specifically for women cyclists and some for novices and families along the new trail. Or you can use your own bikes or borrow some to explore the trail for yourself. The organisers are planning to have a commemorative card available, and in letterboxing fashion, carry the card with you as you explore the trail by bike, or on foot, and obtain stamps at key locations. This will then be a unique memento of this special occasion.

Awarding of lottery funding for the bridge and community path followed a vision to form safe connecting routes between our towns and cities. Inspired by this idea, led rides are being organised on the morning of 5th May from towns and villages across Teignbridge to the celebration event at Old Forde House, and returning afterwards.
