Introduction to Air Pollution

Air pollution occurs when a substance is present in the air in quantities that can have adverse effects on peoples health and on the surrounding environment.

Under the Environment Act 1995 all Local Authorities are required to assess the air quality against a set of national targets (objectives) for seven key pollutants.  The seven pollutants are carbon monoxide, benzene, 1,3-butadiene, lead, nitrogen dioxide, sulphur dioxide and fine particles (PM10).  The air quality assessments have to be carried out every three years and the areas where it is predicted that the health based objectives will not be met, must be declared as Air Quality Management Areas (AQMAs).

Teignbridge has designated four Air Quality Management Areas (AQMA) as a result of the air quality exceeding the objectives at residential receptors on some roads within the district.  The AQMAs were declared in November 2005 in the towns of Newton Abbot, Kingskerswell, Teignmouth and Dawlish.  The boundaries of the AQMAs can be viewed by clicking on the individual AQMA pdf downloads on the right.

Teignbridge has produced an Air Quality Action Plan setting out measures to be introduced to improve air quality in the affected areas. The document has been accepted and approved by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) and has just been subject to consultation.  The action plan will be presented at the Executive on the 14th June 2010 for final approval.
