New Gym for Dawlish Leisure Centre - 24.10.13
A new health and fitness suite is set to open in Dawlish Leisure Centre.
Gym bunnies and fitness fanatics can benefit from a new suite which will boast cardio equipment, strengthening stations and exercise classes.
The health and fitness studio has been created in the former cafe area. It will have a mix of machines and free weights including treadmills, cross trainers, rowers, adjustable benches, a lat pull-down machine, weighted bars, medicine balls, dumbells and more.
The £43,000 for the new offering has come from planning contributions dedicated to improving leisure facilities in Dawlish.
It also forms part of a bigger improvement plan for Dawlish Leisure Centre. During the summer the swimming pool's 13,302 tiles were replaced and the centre was given a fresh update with new doors and lighting, making it an even better place for customers.
Now it's going to benefit those who prefer to stay on dry land.
An official ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held on Saturday 16 November. People will also be able to meet the gym instructors, have a look around and enjoy lots more that will be on offer too.
To celebrate Teignbridge District Council is inviting residents to name the new gym and winner will be announced at the opening event.
The person who comes up with an original name will win a month's free use of the new suite, a personalised fitness programme, a gym induction and a body analysis programme so they can get their new lifestyle off to a flying start at no initial cost.
The multi-use Dawlish Leisure Centre in Sandy Lane, which offers free parking and is next the popular playing fields, has more than 300 members and is busy with visitors throughout the year.
Teignbridge is increasing what the centre offers to give people a wider variety of ways to get fit and stay fit for life.
When the suite opens customers can go along and sign-up for classes like Pilates and yoga as well as more specialised short term weight management classes.
Cllr George Gribble, Teignbridge District Council's Executive Spokesperson for Communities, Recreation and Leisure, said:
"We are thrilled with Dawlish Leisure Centre's new health and fitness suite. We hope all our existing members enjoy it and it attracts more people here. The layout has been carefully designed so people can make the most of the stunning outside views and we've given lots of consideration to the range of equipment so people can do their own workout or get involved in classes.
"Teignbridge is committed to providing top quality leisure and recreational activities at all its leisure centres, parks and open spaces. We think this facility is going to add to an already fantastic offering for residents and visitors."
Cllr Graham Price, Teignbridge Ward Member for Dawlish Central and North East, said:
"This is a wonderful addition to the very popular and well used Dawlish Leisure Centre. It will aid both young and old, those who are fit and those who wish to get fit. It will also benefit those who are recuperating from illness to return to better health."
Cllr Ted Hockin, Teignbridge Ward Member for Dawlish Central and North East, said:
"I am absolutely delighted that in these days of austerity it has been possible to open this new fitness centre. Keeping healthy is very important for all of us and I urge everyone to pay a visit to the Leisure Centre to see and try the refurbished swimming pool and new health and fitness suite."
Name the gym competition forms are available at Dawlish Leisure Centre's reception.
Customers must book an induction prior to using the gym equipment. Existing Teignbridge all-inclusive leisure members can benefit from having another gym available, and even more classes to choose from!
