Help for people with disabilities

Disabled Car Parking

If you are a Blue Badge holder and a Teignbridge resident you may apply for a Disabled Persons Parking Permit to park free in Teignbridge District Council car parks. This applies to qualifying Teignbridge residents only and is subject to a payment.

Toilets and Radar keys

RADAR keys for the district's pubic conveniences are available (subject to payment) from main reception (Teignbridge District Council) and Teignbridge Information Centres at Dawlish and Newton Abbot and Pavilions, Teignmouth along with a list of all the accessible toilets in the district.

Reductions for Disabilities Scheme

A permanently disabled person living in the property as their main home who requires at least one of the following may receive a reduction in the Council Tax:-

  • A room (other than a bathroom, kitchen or toilet) used mainly by the disabled person
  • An additional bathroom or kitchen for use by the disabled person
  • Extra space inside the dwelling to allow for the use of a wheelchair

If the property is eligible, the Council Tax will be reduced to that of a property in the valuation band immediately below that shown in the valuation list.

Refuse & Recycling

We can offer assisted collections for Teignbridge residents with disabilities.

Smaller wheeled bins and sacks and smaller recycling boxes can be provided free of charge on request. Other services available include:

  •  Free weekly clinical collections
  •  Sharps boxes for disposal of hypodermic needles are supplied and collected on request, free of charge.

Countryside visits

Decoy County Park, Aller Brook, Jetty Marsh and Hackney Marshes are suitable for wheelchair users - and a buggy can be booked free of charge for Decoy Country Park (subject to notice)

The visitor centres in both Decoy Country Park and Dawlish Warren National Nature Reserve offer good facilities for people with a wide range of abilities.

Beaches

There are wide flat promenades along most of the beaches in Teignbridge which make them accessible for people with a wide range of abilities. Please note that some slipways onto the beach are slightly steeper than designated wheelchair access which means that some assistance may be needed.
