What is Universal Credit?

Universal Credit is a new benefit for people of working age on a low income. Universal Credit is being introduced gradually across the country and began in Teignbridge on 9 November 2015.

If you are single, newly out-of-work and living in Teignbridge you may be asked to claim Universal Credit instead of Jobseekers Allowance.

Existing benefit claimants: If you are already claiming benefit you do not need to do anything. You will be told when Universal Credit will affect you.

Universal Credit will replace:

  • Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
  • Income Support
  • Working Tax Credit
  • Child Tax Credit
  • Housing Benefit
