Coastal Group

Teignbridge is part of the South Devon and Dorset Coastal Authorities Group (SDADCAG) for coastal councils, ranging from Purbeck District Council in Dorset to Caradon District Council in Cornwall.

South West Strategic Regional Coastal Monitoring Programme

A five year programme for the South West started in April 2006 and was granted £7.2million from DEFRA (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs). The group, led by Teignbridge, is managing a £4.1million element of the coastal monitoring programme including:

  • Hydrodynamic - Waves and Tides Monitoring
  • Bathymetric Surveys
  • Topographic Beach Surveys

The remaining £3.1million is managed by the Environment Agency to deliver:

  • Aerial Photography
  • LiDAR Surveys
  • Ecological Habitat Mapping

A regional data centre known as the Plymouth Coastal Observatory has been established within the University of Plymouth to collect, analyse and publish the data being obtained.

Strong links have been established with the Channel Coastal Observatory (CCO) in Southampton who are managing the data collected by Coastal Monitoring Programme. The South West data will be published on the CCO website.
