1. About Gypsies and Travellers
Most people know very little about the 5000 Gypsies and Travellers living in Devon. The population in Teignbridge comprises mainly of English Romany Gypsies and New Travellers, with a small number of local Irish Travellers in the district.
These days, the majority of Gypsies and Travellers live in houses rather than caravans or vehicles; for many this was due to the change in law with regard to common land in the 1960s; education and health concerns are other reasons.
If you would like to hear about the experiences of some residents content to have Gypsies and Travellers as their neighbours, an audio recording has been made by members of the Gypsy and Traveller forum (7 1/2 minutes long) using Big Lottery funding: getting on with your neighbours - audio [3mb]
