Housing benefit and council tax support

How we collect and use information for housing benefit

We are committed to ensuring that your privacy is protected by adhering to the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

We will use the information you give in your form, and any supporting evidence you send, to process your claim for housing benefit and council tax support.

We may pass the information to other agencies or organisations such as the Department for Work and Pensions and the HM Revenue & Customs, as allowed by the law.

We may cross check information you have provided or that others have provided about you with other information we hold.

We may also get information about you from certain third parties (including government departments, local authorities and banks and organisations that may lend you money) or give information to them to:

  • make sure our information is accurate
  • prevent or detect crime, and
  • protect public funds.

We will not give information about you to anyone else, or use information about you for other purposes, unless the law allows this.

At Teignbridge District Council we use automated decision making in relation to risk based verification for Housing Benefit and Council Tax Support where an algorithm is used to group applications by risk level. The final decision regarding payment of the claim is always made by an officer of the council.

We also use information received from the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP), in relation to changes to DWP benefits in payment or just awarded, which can automatically amend claimants entitlement.

If you want to know more about what information we hold about you, or the way we use that information, please ask us - dataprotection@teignbridge.gov.uk
