Local family celebrate being the 2,000th new householder in Teignbridge

The Tregale family are the 2000th new householder in Teignbridge.

Through its Local Plan, Teignbridge has been working hard to make it possible for aspiring householders to achieve their dream of turning a key in the front door of their own home.

Katie and Matt Tregale, together with their 1-year-old son Leo, moved to Kingsteignton over a year ago in June 2016.

As full time working parents, they chose to live in Kingsteignton to suit their busy lives balancing work, home and family. The Tregales previously rented a 2-bedroomed top floor flat in Newton Abbot, when they felt they had outgrown their home and were looking to move to a more spacious property to cater for their new family.

The family were delighted to discover that their property, which overlooks an attractive green play area, was the 2,000th new home to be completed since the Teignbridge Local Plan was adopted in May 2014.

Katie explains:

“We looked around the area to the east of Newton Abbot, and on a whim, drove into the new Penns Mount housing development because it’s near family and we liked the look of the houses.

“Kingsteignton is a great location – close to the A380 with easy access to Exeter and Teignmouth where we work.  It’s a friendly village, where I actually grew up. I love it here and went to school locally, so I know there are good schools, shops and play facilities, including a mother and baby group in Kingsteignton village hall – all within walking distance.

“We did our homework, comparing Penns Mount with other new builds in the area but we couldn’t beat the location and the price.” added Katie, who works for Lloyds Bank, whilst her husband works for the emergency services.

“It was the right time for us to move because we had recently got married, then discovered I was pregnant. It wasn’t practical to live in a top floor flat with a baby and we didn’t want to rent again. We had a deposit and we wanted to invest in our future so we bought our first home.

“When we decided to buy it, it was still a plot. We just looked at a plan. The build was very quick – we exchanged contracts in January and we moved in by the end of June, so it only took 6 months. Building work around us is ongoing, but this has not been an issue for us and at weekends, it’s quiet here.

“We moved in 3 weeks after Leo was born. We have a lovely roomy house and a big safe garden.  We love the open plan layout: the kitchen and dining areas open out to feel really spacious plus it’s great to have 3 bedrooms, which gives us room to grow. We also love the garden – especially as we didn’t have one before in our flat. It will be so good for Leo to play and run around in for years to come.

“One of the best days we’ve had in our new home was spent hosting Leo’s first birthday party, when we invited the whole family.

“There are lots of couples and young families near here so there’s a great community feel. Children play on the green space at the front of the house, so lots for Leo to do and children for him to play with.”

Teignbridge District Council’s Leader and Executive Member for Strategic Direction, Cllr Jeremy Christophers said:

“Reaching the 2000th new household is a significant milestone for our district. We extend a warm welcome to the Tregale family, who are living in their own home and enjoying being part of the local community.

“This is a great example of how we help local families to live in the kind of homes they want and need. The Tregale family have been able to choose a home near their families and their jobs and are now part of the growing community of Kingsteignton. We all wish them well.

“The Teignbridge Council Strategy super project ‘a roof over our heads’ highlights that providing much-needed homes for hard working local families which they can afford is a priority for us. We make sure we take account of all kinds of housing needs to provide homes that suit people’s lifestyles.”

Linden Homes’ Sales and Marketing Director, Brian Deacon, said:

“We’re delighted that Katie and Matt are enjoying family life in their new house at Kings Gate, especially as their son Leo was able to have his first birthday in their first new home. Kings Gate has proved very popular with families and we’re pleased that there is such a warm community feel to the development already.

“Congratulations to Teignbridge District Council on reaching this key milestone and to the family on being the 2000th new householder in Teignbridge!”
