Teignbridge helping residents save money and be more energy efficient
A new price comparison service has been launched to help residents make savings on their fuel bills by switching energy suppliers.
The energy switching service has been unveiled by Teignbridge District Council in partnership with Ofgem accredited USwitch, who run the comparison engines for many of the UK’s biggest switching organisations, and Agility ECO.
The initiative is aimed at helping householders reduce their energy use and ensure they can afford to heat their homes more effectively through the colder months and beyond.
It is estimated that over 6153 (10.9%)* of residents in Teignbridge are living in fuel poverty. To reduce fuel poverty Teignbridge has been working towards improving housing conditions through loft and cavity wall insulation, solid wall insulation and central heating schemes via various funding schemes such as Help to Heat and through an energy advice service LEAP (Local Energy Advice Service).
Teignbridge says the search engine which powers the switches is ‘100 per cent accurate’ in determining the best supplier for the individual household circumstance and gives totally independent advice on the cheapest tariff.
In return, the website generates income back to the council through commission generated from switches. The authority receive a small amount of commission from the energy suppliers each time a resident switches a fuel and this commission goes directly into supporting and improving public services which residents rely upon.
This commission would normally be paid to the private company responsible for promoting the service, usually based somewhere else in the UK. By residents switching with Teignbridge, it helps to keep this money local to them and the services that impact their lives.
The free service is available to all, whether you rent your home or own it. You can visit the financial help energy switching page or call 0800 954 7491.
Cllr Humphrey Clemens, Teignbridge District Council’s executive for planning and housing, said:
“With the darker and colder months upon us, why not consider reviewing your energy provider now?
“There is simply nothing to lose by registering and seeing if the winning supplier beats your current energy prices. It’s one of the easiest ways to reduce your household expenses and ensure you’re not paying more than you need to.
“By partnering with USwitch and AgilityEco, we’ve been able to generate money back into the local authority, with funds going right back into supporting and sustaining council services, which benefits everyone.
“I encourage everyone to use the site and take a look at what you could save. If you haven’t switched your tariff recently there’s the potential to save pounds, not just pennies.”
