2. Leader of the Council and Executive

The Leader of the Council is Councillor Gordon Hook.

The Leader is nominated by the largest political group at the annual meeting of the Council. They are then elected for a term of four years. The Leader is responsible for carrying out the Executive functions of the Council and leading on policy development. He or she also represents the Council in communications with Central Government and takes a central role in working with other organisations in the public, private and voluntary sectors.

After being appointed, the Leader of the Council recommends the names of Councillors who are to serve in the Executive.

The Executive

The Executive is responsible for most day to day decisions made by the council. It oversees the formulation of new policies and strategies and considers reports and recommendations from the Overview and Scrutiny Committee.
