13. Polling District and Places Review 2019

Under the Representation of the People Act 1983 (as amended by the Electoral Registration and Administration Act 2013) we are required to undertake a statutory review of our Parliamentary polling districts and polling places. The Act also requires that we consult widely before reaching a decision on preferred polling district and polling place arrangements. In addition, the Acting Returning Officer for each constituency is required to submit his or her own proposals for future electoral arrangements.

The timetable for the review is shown below and we welcome the views of all residents, particularly disabled residents, or any person or body with expertise in access for persons with any type of disability on the current arrangement of polling districts and places. Comments are also welcome with regard to any issues contained within the Information Sheet. Additional views are also sought concerning the Acting Returning Officer’s representation (when published), or any other related matters.

In Teignbridge a polling district, where possible, is normally an entire parish or ward of a parish.  In the larger towns some parish wards may be split into separate polling districts to enable voters within a large parish or parish ward to be allocated to different polling stations.  A polling place is the area in which a polling station will be selected by the (Acting) Returning Officer.  The polling place is normally designated as the entire area of the parish so that the choice of polling station or stations is not restricted, as polling station locations may need to change if they become unavailable for a particular election.

Polling stations are chosen by the (Acting) Returning Officer and although they do not form part of this review, any comments on the designated polling stations for each area will be taken onto account as part of our on-going process to improve access to democracy at a local level.

The consultation period for this review will commence on Monday 5 August 2019 and end on Friday 6 September 2019.

Any person or organisation wishing to make a representation in respect of the arrangement of polling districts and polling places within the boundary of Teignbridge District Council; must write to: Mrs Cathy Ruelens, Polling District Review, Electoral Services Office, Forde House, Brunel Road, Newton Abbot TQ12 4XX or by email to electoralservices@teignbridge.gov.uk by 6 September 2019.
