Registration with Ofsted

Childminders are required to register as a childminder with Ofsted.

Food hygiene visits by Environmental Health

We are notified by Ofsted of all registered childminders in Teignbridge. If you are a newly registered childminder, we may visit you to discuss general food hygiene practices to ensure food is being prepared safely and to carry out an initial inspection.

Food hygiene training

All food handlers must be trained according to their type of work activity. See Food hygiene training for further information on training courses.

Food safety and infection control in childcare training

Teignbridge District Council (Environmental Health) and Devon County Council (Early Years) offer a 3 hour update session for Childminders. This session covers:

  • The ‘Safer Food, Better Business for Childminders’ document
  • General food safety and hygiene updates
  • Main causes of food poisoning and how to prevent them
  • Allergens
  • Managing pets in the childcare environment
  • Infection control measures

This is an update/refresher session only. A certificate of attendance will be given to those who attend, which will count towards your CPD.

Food safety management documentation

Safer Food Better Business for childminders is designed to help protect the health of the children they look after. The pack gives simple, straightforward advice on food safety including information on cooking, cleaning, chilling, feeding babies and children, and looking after a child with a food allergy.
