Air pollution occurs when a substance is present in the air in quantities that can have adverse effects on people's health and on the surrounding environment.
Under the Environment Act 1995 we are required to assess the air quality against a set of national targets (objectives) for seven key pollutants National air quality objectives
We have designated four Air Quality Management Areas (AQMA) as a result of the air quality exceeding the objectives at residential receptors on some roads within the district. The AQMAs are in:

Air Quality Action Plan
We have produced an Air Quality Action Plan explaining what we are doing to reduce levels of nitrogen dioxide within the air quality management areas. The document has been accepted and approved by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA).
Annual status report
Every year the council produces a report which summaries the latest air pollution levels, and actions that are being taken in the district to reduce pollution.
