Things to consider when renting

6. Suitability - location and space

You should think about how you will get your children to school, how you will get to work and to appointments you may have. You should check local bus routes and other public transport options and costs or consider changing schools, or doctors to be nearer to your home.

If you have your own transport you should consider your fuel costs and whether there is a place you can park your car.

When moving to a new area you should think about access to the services you may need, for example, shops, GP surgeries, dentists and so on. You may wish to contact local schools to see if there are any spaces before committing to a tenancy.

Is the property of a suitable size for your household? Larger properties are more expensive to rent and the bills likely to be higher, but you must also consider if it reasonable for you to live in a smaller property in the long term.

If you will be claiming Housing Benefit, you can use the online assessment to check your bedroom entitlement rates.
