Residents invited to take part in the Great British Spring Clean

Residents across Teignbridge are being invited to help clean up the county, as this year’s Keep Britain Tidy's nationwide Great British Spring Clean returns, from 28 May to 13 June.

This year’s nationwide litter picking campaign is inviting people to take part in a #MillionMileMission. Clean Devon, a county-wide partnership of local authorities and other organisations is backing the campaign, and is encouraging residents across the district to organise a group clean-up or pledge to do their own individual litter pick.

The national event coincides with the partnership’s new campaign 'find a bin or take it home' which launched 25 March. The campaign encourages residents and visitors alike to take responsibility for their rubbish, whilst enjoying all that Devon has to offer.

Teignbridge is able to supply litter picking equipment and guidelines, including covid guidance, for community groups that would like to undertake a litter picking initiative.

The campaign supports the council’s commitment to tackling litter and flytipping across the district and to reducing and reusing waste.

Councillor Alistair Dewhirst, Executive Member for Environment at Teignbridge District Council, said: “This is a well recognised national campaign that we’re pleased to support alongside our own recycling initiatives.

“With the increase in visitors to the region, and with people being out and about more following the relaxation of covid restrictions, we’re seeing an increase in the amount of litter across parts of the district.

“We all want to keep our beaches, parks and green spaces looking beautiful and clean, and encourage wildlife to flourish. We’re really fortunate to have some fantastic local groups already who regularly carry out beach cleans and litter picks, and we hope this campaign will not only encourage people to help out in their local community, but will also remind people to dispose of their litter responsibly.”
