Compact Homes

1. Compact Homes

Teignbridge District Council are considering the potential benefits and costs of allowing very small custom built homes, known as Compact Homes.

We’re exploring this type of lower cost housing as a response to;

  • The mismatch between the cost of market housing compared to local household incomes
  • Increasing housing rental costs
  • Demand from small households

We consider Compact Homes hold potential to;

  • Be low or zero carbon homes
  • Reduce visual impact on sensitive sites by limiting homes to 1 or 1.5 storey
  • Enhance economic benefits through local manufacture / increased spend through local builders merchants
