Self and custom house building including Self Build register

Show all parts of this guide

2. What is the self build and custom house building register?

The Government wants to enable more people to build or commission their own homes. The self-build and custom house building register will provide an indication of demand for self and custom build in our area that can be used when developing housing and planning policies.

From 1 April 2016 we were required to keep a register of people looking for land in our area on which to build their own homes. Also to 'have regard' to this demand in our planning, housing and regeneration functions and when disposing of any of our land. For full details please see the Self-build and Custom Housebuilding Act 2015.

The Housing and Planning Act 2016 placed a duty on the Council to meet demand (target number based on Register number) by granting ‘development permissions’ for enough serviced plots to meet demand on a rolling annual basis.

Future legislation and guidance may make us to require or seek further information.
