Listed buildings

Show all parts of this guide

1. What is a listed building?

Buildings are listed by Historic England to give special protection due to their historic or architectural interest. The listings are varied and range from historic mansions to telephone boxes and milestones. There are around 1,800 listings in Teignbridge (excluding Dartmoor National Park).

Listed buildings are graded according to their importance to the nation's built heritage:

  • Grade I and II* are those identified as being of outstanding national architectural or historic interest. Around 8% of our listed buildings are this grade (above the national average).
  • Grade II are those identified as being of national importance. Around 92% of our listed buildings are this grade.

Further information is on the Historic England Listing website page.
