7. Settlement Hierarchy

  • the settlement hierarchy is the order of settlements reflecting the role and function and their degree of sustainability in the District
  • the review investigates the role and function of the District’s settlements
  • it proposes a new category of settlement, ‘Main Villages’, to identify those villages which contain a higher level of services than other villages
  • these villages provide regular bus services, mobile/broadband connectivity, doctors surgeries, good road access, primary schools and many other key services
  • later stages of the review will establish the distribution of new housing in the District based on these categories
