8. Oaklands Wood

Oaklands Wood is located by Shillingate Close just off John Nash Drive, Dawlish. This woodland of sweet chestnut, beech, oak and sycamore, was originally planted in part of the grounds of Oaklands House. Recent management to boost wildlife includes work by Rangers and local volunteers to control invasive species, such as laurel, and to plant native trees and shrubs in their place. The wood adjoins the old tree-lined driveway to Oaklands House, most of which can be seen on neighbouring land. The area is rich in birdlife, fungi and spring wildflowers and can be explored on an extensive network of paths.
